Spanish fast-fashion retailer Zara opens its largest New York store today. The new 500 Fifth Avenue flagship location boasts an even larger array of styles and a chicer aesthetic. (WWD).
Fashion heads are not the only ones affected by the unfriendly retail waters. This year's Design Miami fair, which is known as the most extreme, high end fair for contemporary furniture, has seen a significant drop in demand for unique design pieces. (WSJ).
Danish Houses Jens Laugesen and Camilla Staerk Both Fold
Small fashion businesses are the most vulnerable during periods of economic downturn. As if the luxury market itself isn't seeming bleak enough! Two labels founded by Danish designers have now been shuttered. We've just learned that London-based Danish designer Jens Laugesen, known for his minimalist and androgynous designs, has closed his signature label after six years. The news follows last month’s announcement that Danish luxury brand Camilla Staerk was shut by its owner, Danish fashion giant Bestseller. Both have cited a lack of investment and declining sales. read more »

Tom Ford's First Feature Film
Tom Ford founded his own production company, Fade to Black, three years ago. Now, the designer is finally taking his much-anticipated seat in the director's chair, filming the company's first feature, A Single Man. The film is an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s novel of the same name, and is said to star Colin Firth, Julianne Moore and Matthew Goode. See the WWD scoop at wwd.com.

Yesterday, on an oh-so charming election-year whim, Barneys New York workers were hanging portraits of the wives of 43 American presidents painted by the artist Laurie Munn.
