The Many Talents Of Stephen Galloway

Approximate Sonata, costumes by Stephen Galloway
Art and fashion fusions are nothing new, but rarely do the two worlds collide so forcefully as they do in Stephen Galloway. The American-born talent has performed with and created costumes for the world's most elite dance and opera companies; provided art direction for the likes of Issey Miyake and Yves Saint Laurent; choreographed a Rolling Stones world tour; and consulted with photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin on projects from Vogue editorials to Gucci ad campaigns. And, as if these highlights weren't enough for one career, this one-man tour-de-force is set to unveil a new set of fashion and performance projects for 2009.

The Classic Charm Of JVDF

JVDF wallet
Justin von der Fehr traded baseball training for a trip to the local Gucci store at the ripe age of 12. He loved the look and feel of the products, the way they were made and the thought process behind the designs, but he didn't consider a career in the industry until years later.

Russian Retail Revolution

Chapurin store
Moscow may harbor as many designer boutiques as any of the world's major fashion capitals, but given the solid display of talent seen during the city's recent fashion week, it seems surprising that more of those boutiques aren't fronted by Russian designers. And yet, three of the country's most celebrated names have recently opened their own shops in the capitol, combining innovative design and lifestyle elements with a distinct national flavor.

Bright Young Italian Things

Normaluisa
As the spring/summer '09 collections draw to a close, much of the buzz from New York to Paris has been devoted to emerging talent. But in Milan, the talk of the town continues to revolve around the same names as ever—Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana. Italy is home to just as many upstart designers as any other fashion hub, but most people would have a hard time naming more than a few of them.

Available throughout October, starting Wednesday.  read more »

Milan Fashion Week: Che Confusione!

Dolce & Gabbana s/s '09
Blow-by-blow accounts of bank closings and bailout debates dominated the news during the Milan collections last week. The hot topic among editors and buyers—warily there to view fashion's prescription for moving clothes in a climate no longer teeming with a bottomless pit of consumers—was understandably the issue of selling. After the saleable prints and commercial friendly New York collections and the optimistic bright colors and sheath dresses seen in London, Milan left us puzzled and uncertain by week's end.

The shows started off promising enough at Gianfranco Ferre. Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi's debut at the house was bold in architectural shapes, stiff and precise, with loads of chic options for women to make seasonal fashion waves.  read more »

Milan Fashion Week: Gucci Is Long for Necklaces

Gucci s/s '09
Statement necklaces—a trend we've been forecasting since introducing Bea Valdes—dominate the jewelry options for spring. And, as an alternative to chunky face framers, we now herald the arrival of long dangling chains with seemingly random bits and pieces jutting off.

New York Toasts Iguatemi

Iguatemi
Although fashion week parties always attract an unusual mix, the likes of Alexandre Herchcovitch and Celerie Kemble aren't often found mingling over capirinhas. But Carlos Jereissati, CEO of Brazillian retail group Iguatemi, somehow attracted this diverse crowd to an intimate dinner party during the already busy New York Fashion Week.
